Microfiber refers to very fine synthetic fibers that have a star-like appearance when the cross section of the fiber is viewed under magnification. Microfiber cloths and mop pads used for consumer cleaning are generally constructed from polyester or polyester and polyamide. Fabrics made from microfiber are extremely soft and hold their shape well. When microfiber is constructed properly, it is an extremely effective cleaning material. One of its main advantages is that it can hold up to seven times its weight in water! It picks up oil equally as well.
Another advantage of microfiber is its softness, making it ideal for use in dusting and polishing. Here is where a word of caution must be inserted, however. Microfiber can also pick up and hold grit better than most cloth. So before picking up a microfiber cloth to dust your fine furniture or polish your mirrors, be sure that it is free of debris. To keep your microfiber cloths clean and grit free, never wash them with heavily soiled clothes, sponges, or cleaning cloths, and air dry them. This will help keep them from picking up a bunch of lint as well as debris from the washer or dryer. Use only regular washing detergent, not oily, soap-based detergents. Do not use fabric softener as this will clog up the fibers, making them less effective until the residue is washed out.
Though microfiber cleaning cloths and mops may cost a bit more than their cotton counterparts, they will outlast them by quite a lot, making them a cost-effective choice in the long run.
