“Summer”-ize Your Home

Summer provides the perfect opportunity to freshen up your home. On the days that are not too hot, throw open the windows and let the coastal breezes refresh your living space. Nature does a better (and healthier) job of cleaning up your air than artificial air fresheners can do. Another great way to improve the air quality in your home is by growing house plants. Plants use up the Carbon Dioxide floating around and exchange it for life-giving Oxygen. Summer is a great time to pick up some extra plants from your local nursery, or bring in cuttings from the yard. Celebrate summer!

Cleaning Tips

Did you know that switching from bar soap to liquid body wash will help prevent the build up of soap scum on your shower walls and glass shower doors?

Did you know that tossing 2-3 denture cleaning tablets into the toilet and allowing them to sit for several hours makes toilet cleaning a snap?

Did you know that using mats both inside and outside your entry doors will cut down on the need for frequent dusting and vacuuming of your whole house? Also timely changes (usually 2-3 months) of your furnace filters will work the same magic!

Did you know that cleaning stainless steel appliances with oil may look great at first, but the oil will attract dust and fingerprints like crazy. Instead, get rid of grease spots with dish soap or all-purpose cleaner/degreaser, then polish the surface with a commercially prepared product for stainless steel and buff to a shine. This will help protect the surface from dust and spots.

Got Hard Water Problems?

I’m guessing that if you live in Southern California, the chances are pretty great that you do.

Here’s a tip on how to solve the problem of a clogged shower head. If possible, remove your shower head and soak it in a mixture of 1 cup vinegar in 1 quart water for at least 15 minutes. If it is a plastic shower head, use equal parts of vinegar and water and soak for an hour. By now you should be able to remove the dissolving deposits with a brush, and rinse away.

If your shower head is impossible to remove, you can make a soaking bag for it by filling a plastic bag with vinegar solution and fasten it to the shower head with some string or a rubber band. Let it soak overnight and by morning the clogging should be dissolved and your shower head nice and clean.

Does Your Garbage Disposal Smell Like Garbage?

There are a number of ways to freshen up your garbage disposal.

Grind up some citrus peels with a steady stream of cold water. Sprinkle baking soda over ice cubes and feed them into the disposal. Or mix 1/2 cup baking soda with 1 cup of white vinegar and pour it into the disposal that is turned off. Let it sit for 20 minutes, then flush with hot water. Any of these methods should produce a fresh clean garbage disposal.

Air Fresheners Without Toxicity

Did you know that many of the air fresheners on the market today contain carcinogenic chemicals such as naphthalene and formaldehyde?

There is a better, safer way to make your home smell clean and fresh. Start by removing the source of the offensive odors by regular cleaning. Then try natural fragrances from essential oils or used green tea leaves to deodorize. Drinking green tea provides your body with a powerful anti-oxidant, but the benefits don’t have to stop there. Place the used green tea bags in a bowl and leave them, uncovered, in the refrigerator for a few days. Or use them to deodorize pans or cutting boards you have used to prepare fish, garlic, or onions. Use them in kitty litter boxes and on yoga mats. Green tea leaves even make an excellent fertilizer for your plants, as they are high in nitrogen and ward off some pests. Keep in mind that wet tea leaves can stain some surfaces, so use with discretion.

Green Cleaning Tips

Did you know that Tea Tree oil can kill mold? Just mix a few drops with your all-purpose or tile cleaner and use it next time you tackle your shower. Spray it on, agitate it with a scrub brush and let it sit for awhile, then rinse away.

Bon Ami has been around for ages. Didn’t know how “green” it was until lately, however. It’s made of very simple ingredients like baking soda, limestone, and feldspar.

Got Clean Windows?

Realtors will tell you that first impressions are so important when trying to sell a house. Sparkling clean windows are one of the best investments you can make to ensure a good first impression for prospective buyers.

If that is so, then it stands to reason that sparkling clean windows make good impressions on all your visitors and on how you feel about your house, too, even if you are not thinking of selling! If you are a do-it-yourselfer, invest in a quality squeegee and learn how to use it. Prepare your own cleaning solution by adding just a drop of dish soap and a tablespoon or so of vinegar to a gallon of warm water. Use a clean terrycloth rag to dissolve the dirt on your windows, then run your squeegee across the top portion of glass, wipe the blade and make firm even strokes from top to bottom. Use a clean dry cloth to wipe off any moisture left at the edges of the glass or elsewhere. Check back over your work for streaks. Most can be buffed out with a dry cloth. If that doesn’t  work, re-moisten the area and buff it out again. If you have not the time or energy to do your own windows, call HomeLife for professional window cleaning service. There’s nothing like bringing the beauty of nature indoors by having clean windows through which to view it!

Chem Dry Vs. Steam Cleaning Your Carpet

What is the difference between the two main methods of carpet and upholstery cleaning?

Chem Dry uses carbonated bubbles to loosen the dirt from carpet, then the dirt is removed by extraction. Drying time is less for the Chem Dry method, but it is usually a more expensive process.

Commonly referred to as “steam cleaning”, hot water extraction uses pressurized hot water combined with a non toxic chemical formula that breaks up the soil which is then drawn out of the carpet or upholstery by suction. Truck mounted equipment is better able to extract the dirty water from your carpet than a portable unit would be. Drying time varies a lot with the humidity and temperature. It is advisable to stay off the carpet until it dries, so scheduling your carpet cleaning on warmer, drier days enables you to shorten the drying time. This is the method HomeLife Housekeeping uses.

Happy New Year

If one of your resolutions is to keep a neater house this year, here are a few tips to consider:

There are many small things that can be done to help keep a family organized and clutter free. Try to think about what a space is intended for and eliminate all the stuff that doesn’t belong in that space. For example, if you have a telephone in the kitchen (ideally a wall-mounted one over a desk or accessible counter space), here are the items you should have within easy access: a list of “frequently called” numbers, including emergency numbers, a notepad, some takeout menus, a calendar, and a pen. If the station is next to the refrigerator, a magnetic notepad with a pen on a cord and a magnetic pocket for menus and other papers can be a space-saving setup. Or use a tray next to the phone, keeping notepads and papers confined in the tray. Everything else must go!

Bedside stands should hold a book, a light, an alarm clock, and space for your eyeglasses and/or hearing aid. A small drawer in the nightstand could hold medication you need access to, the TV and/or DVD remote, and a small flashlight. A shelf underneath is useful for holding magazines and books to read. Anything not needed while you are in bed does not belong on or in the bedside stand.

You get the idea. You can apply the same principle to dresser tops, closets, laundry room storage spaces, etc. Using spaces strictly for their intended purposes makes for a neater, tidier home. This is not to say that you cannot accessorize. In fact, if you place a lovely ceramic bowl or a vase of dried flowers as a focal point on a flat surface, it may discourage the placement of a lot of junk there, as the junk will look very out of place.

Organizing your living space is something that you yourself can do best, while scrubbing the shower, toilets, and sinks, dusting, and vacuuming are things your housecleaner can do for you, and it will make her/his job easier (and less costly for you) if there is not a mountain of misplaced stuff to deal with in the process.
